Here are some great quotes by or about William Wilberforce (WW).

“Joy is enjoined on us as our bounden duty and commended to us as acceptable worship.” WW

Said about WW: “His presence was as fatal to dullness as to immorality.”

A Duke to Wilberforce: “You have made me so entirely forget you are a great man by seeming to forget it yourself.”

Said about WW: “William insisted on eating as many meals as possible with the children, and he joined in their games.”

Said about WW: “He was a most cheerful Christian. His harp appeared to be always in tune.”

This weekend is “God Cares about the Prodigal!” It’s gonna be good stuff. Hope to see you there.

Day 3: He is the Mighty God

READ: Isaiah 9.6

For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. – Isaiah 9.6

There is a popular praise song that most of us learned as children. In fact, my children sing it and probably their children will sing it as well:

“What a Mighty God we serve; What a Mighty God we serve; Angels bow before Him; Heaven and earth adore Him; What a Mighty God we serve”

This is a wonderful picture Jesus as “God the mighty One”. Christ is God – truly and properly so. He is everlasting to everlasting and He is all powerful. He created all things out of nothing. He upholds all things. He heals all manner of diseases. He has power over the elements (earth, rain, wind, seas, etc). He redeems us with His blood. The list goes on and on.

There are some today who we would classify as “mighty” according to the world – perhaps the Pope or the President of the United States. These men are icons and are, for the most part, unapproachable and unknowable except to those select few that happen to be in their “inner circle”. The good news about our all mighty, all righteous Christ is that He is approachable and knowable. He wants a relationship with us and invites us to know Him.

Jeremiah 9.23-24: Thus says the LORD, “Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD who exercises lovingkindness, justice and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things,” declares the LORD.

May you be encouraged this Christmas season with the knowledge that our God is a God of all people. He is intimately acquainted with all of our ways and wants us to be intimately acquainted with Him.

What a Mighty God we serve!

Special Live Presentation of the Gospel of Mark

Friday Sept 12

6:30 p.m. in the EFCC Chapel

Come hear Chris Montelongo, with a video introduction by Mark Strauss, perform the powerful and transforming message of Mark’s Gospel “word-for-word.” The original “Gospel” did not refer to the written Bible, but to the oral proclamation of the words and deeds of Jesus.  For most of church history, God’s people have received God’s Word by hearing it orally, rather than by reading it privately.

“I loved, loved, loved it! A younger congregation, fantastic music, dancing in the pews, more people lifting their hands in praise, the casual atmosphere – they were all things I was seeking along with solid teaching of the Bible. They somehow make the church feel smaller and it felt like home.” – Kathy Bloomfield
